Winning starts long before 2029…

Milton Keynes’ bid for City of Culture 2029

Over the last few weeks I’ve attended three very different events linked to the bid.

The first a rallying call at Bletchley Park, the second at MK Gallery, exploring the relationship between creativity, culture, technology and innovation through the lens of CreaTech.

The third when Fiona Boundy (Creative & Cultural Strategy Manager, Milton Keynes City Council) spoke at the July Milton Keynes City Breakfast Club event.

As creativity, culture and technology continue to overlap, it feels like there’s a real opportunity for cities like ours. We’ve always been associated with innovation and entrepreneurship and this feels like a chance to show another side of the city.

One of the challenges will be helping the judges see Milton Keynes as we do. Not because Milton Keynes lacks culture. Quite the opposite. From the International Festival and the African Diaspora Festival to our theatres, galleries, artists, musicians and creative businesses, there’s already an incredible story to tell.

Winning would bring national attention, investment and new opportunities, while helping to move some of the frustrating, well-worn clichés about Milton Keynes into the past. The real success won’t just be measured in 2029, but what comes next.

For me, a huge opportunity lies with young people. The more they can feel connected with creativity, culture and innovation, the more likely they are to engage with the city’s story, see how they can help shape its future and feel proud of the place they call home. Alongside that, new investment, increased opportunities, thriving businesses and the creation of more high quality jobs would help strengthen the city for everyone. And encourage our young people to stay.

Milton Keynes has always been a city willing to do things differently. It was built on innovation, ambition and a belief that new approaches can create new opportunities.

August 10, 2026: Deadline to submit our final application.
Autumn 2026: Shortlisted cities expected to be announced by the independent panel.
Early 2027: Winning 2029 City of Culture revealed during Milton Keynes’ 60th anniversary year.
